Medifast Shakes: A Foundation for Weight Loss
The Medifast weight loss program is experiencing exponential growth as word of mouth about its success rates spreads. A thriving community of enthusiasts has grown up around the product and provides a great place to get support, advice and encouragement. One of the more interesting byproducts of the community is the huge amount of Medifast recipes created by Medifasters. The community has created recipes for not only Lean and Green meals, but recipes using the pre-packaged Medifast products (shakes, oatmeal, soups, scrambled eggs, etc.)
For this article we will concentrate on Medifast Shake Recipes. The shake mix has been used to develop all kinds of foods that the Medifast scientists probably never envisioned. There is even a recipe for "shake cake."
What do Medifast Shakes Taste Like?
Before you start experimenting with Medifast Shake recipes, it's important to know a little bit about the shakes themselves. The really provide the foundation for all the other elements of the weight loss program. The shakes are available in two varieties: powdered mixes and ready-to-drink. I'm not a big fan of the ready-to-drink variety because they don't taste quite as good and it doesnÕt allow you to experiment with recipes.
The shakes are available in 6 different flavors: Dutch Chocolate, French Vanilla, Banana Creme, Strawberry Creme, Orange Creme and French Vanilla. All the shakes are delicious, but from a recipes perspective, Dutch Chocolate and French Vanilla provide the most opportunities.
The Rocket Blender
Your first order of Medifast usually comes with a plastic shaker. You add the ingredients, snap on the lid and shake it up. This actually works pretty well, but doesn't exactly produce creamy shakes. After a few weeks on the program I decided to purchase a Rocket Blender and it really improved the shakes tremendously.
The Rocket Blender has an ultra-simple design very similar to the Magic Bullet that is so popular with many Medifast enthusiasts. It comes with 7 mixing cups and 2 different mixing blades. You just add your ingredients, screw on the mixing base, set it on the unit and push down. Hold down on it or twist it into the locked position and let it blend until it's the consistency you like.
I've had my Rocket Blender for 6 months and it is still a great blender. I feel like it has paid for itself several times now. The only drawback is that if you are using large pieces of ice, it sometimes has trouble grinding down the last little bits, but it really doesn't detract from overall enjoyment of the shakes.
Design Your Own Medifast Shakes
One of the great thing about the Medifast Shake mixes is that you can really make up your own concoctions. Adding additional flavors is one of the most popular techniques. For example try adding a little Crystal Light powder to the French Vanilla shake. There are a lot of different options, but French Vanilla and Lemonade is my favorite combination. I like to call it the Lemon Meringue Shake.
Another popular option is to add Davinci Sugar Free Syrups as a flavor enhancer. If you've ever been to a Starbucks you've probably already tasted these flavors, because this is exactly what they use to flavor their drinks. These are usually located in your grocery store's coffee aisle. Remember: Sugar Free Varieties only!
If you're using the Davinci Sugar Free Syrups you'll soon have an amazing variety of options. Some of my favorites are Hazelnut syrup with French Vanilla Shake, Coconut Syrup with French Vanilla and any of the nut flavored syrups combined with the Dutch Chocolate shake. These are really great in the hot chocolate as well.

With the chocolate and mocha shakes I put in ice cubes that I've frozen from leftover coffee as well as some cold leftover coffee... With the orange creme I put in just a couple of ice cubes frozen from fresh lemon juice (lemons from my own tree). With the strawberry I put in ice cubes made from herbal tea (passion fruit flavor). With all these I usually add a little seltzer, too. With the vanilla, which I tried for the first time today, I put just some seltzer. Haven't tried the banana yet. Am looking for other suggestions, so I welcome your suggestion about the syrups. Any other suggestions for any flavors?
